The ghosts of 9 million users lingered over AOL's dead carcass Wednesday afternoon. Then AOL rose from the grave -- to haunt the on-line world all over again...

While AOL may wow stockholders with high-tech dog-and-pony shows, grass roots jesters hold them up to derision on Halloween. And like pranksters soaping windows, on-line vandals visited the service this week to deface their content...
But the scariest thing about AOL might be its continued popularity. Even with bad performance -- and even when the service cost $3.50 an hour -- people kept signing up for it.
