Apache isn't just a great web moment. In some sense, it is the web. Two-thirds of all web pages are passed from document directories to your web browser via Apache's servers, lovingly handled by Apache's virtual hands...

The story I heard is some geeks at HotWired weren't satisfied with the (only) web-server software in existence in the early/mid-90s. So they got all hands-on and coded up tweaks, eventually spawning an entirely new software built from scratch.

Oh, and it's Open Source, a collective effort that coalesced into an effective and important piece of software. Ten more years of laying on hands, and Apache became a pivotal piece of technology. Nestled deep in the mysterious heart of the internet, it's still out there to this day - giving documents eager for audiences their unseen launching pads.
